Today my colleague Nicola Franklin and I held a lunch time session on how to effectively complete Application forms. We had a good number of people attend and it turned out to be a very interactive session. The group shared tips and frustrations they had experienced when filling in the forms in the past. To summarise the session, our top tips for filling out application forms are:
1) To read the instructions carefully and take the time to prepare what you are going to say in the form. This is a good opportunity to sell yourself and show the employer how much you know about them, and how well suited you are to the role.
2) Use the Person Specification and Job description they have provided to compose the person/supporting statement (the big blank box). Make sure you cover each point on the person specification, and use an example from previous experience to highlight your competence in this area.
3) With Online Application forms it is just as important to spend the time preparing. Although electronic application forms can be frustrating to complete as sometimes you do not have the ability to scroll through the screens to find out all the information needed before preparing what to write in each area. It's good to ascertain before starting if the form can be saved, so that you can go back in later to finish or change things before finally submitting it.
Good luck!
