I presented at the CILIP Career Development Group New Professionals Conference in Sheffield on Monday, and I came away from the conference feeling really inspired. The theme of the conference was proving your worth in challenging times. The day included speakers and their take on this, alongside parallel workshops - one of which was by me on effective CV writing.
In this challenging economic time it has quite often been said that graduates are some of the worst affected, so it was really interesting to see how other information professionals had succeeded in the face of adversity, and how they have marketed and promoted their skills in this difficult climate.
A big congratulations to Bronagh McCrudden who won the prize for best paper for her talk: Would You Work for Free? Unpaid Work in the Information Profession and How to Make it Count. She won £100 and a bottle of fizz, sponsored by Sue Hill Recruitment.
Another highlight of the day was when Ned Potter and Chris Rhodes launched the LIS New Professionals Network (LISNPN). It is a fantastic way for new professionals to build a network with colleagues who are also just starting out, and it includes information on events, jobs, and resources.
A big thank you to Maria Cotera and everyone in the Career Development Group who made this event such a success!
